Voice over IP (VoIP) offers companies dramatic efficiencies that can save them big bucks. What could be better than making yourself the go-to guy for all your organization's VoIP solutions? Cisco Gateways and Gatekeepers (GWGK) is a complex body of VoIP knowledge, and certification shows that you understand it. Jeremy Cioara's video series makes learning advanced GWGK concepts fast and enjoyable. Plus, it gives you the framework and configuration examples you need to handle your Gateway needs. Whether you're specializing in VoIP gateway configurations in live environments or seeking to round out your VoIP expertise with CCVP certification, this is definitely the training for you. GWGK takes you into the upper reaches of voice connectivity, and once you're done watching Jeremy's videos, you'll be ready to solve your unusual GWGK-related problems -- whenever they pop up. Here's some of what you'll get from this terrific series:

  • A thorough understanding of Digit Manipulation, which allows you to change Caller-ID or dialed-number information as it passes through your router. These are complex concepts, but with Jeremy's expert instruction, you'll know them inside-out.
  • A real-world look at PSTN through analog and digital connections, using practical examples and interlacing configurations. You'll actually be setting up live equipment and encountering pitfalls typical of the problems you'll face on the job.
  • Learn to implement "Class of Restriction (COR)" on Cisco gateways. Using COR, you can allow or restrict calls based on "who you are" through the gateway.
Think of GWGK as "advanced CVoice," because it fills in a whole bunch of CVoice "what-if" gaps. Due to the nature of material covered in the other CCVP exams, some stuff just didn't warrant greater detail; this training fills those gaps. While Jeremy's training is getting you totally up to speed on VoIP, it also prepares you for Cisco certification exam 642-453. Please note: because GWGK builds on CVoice and CIPT, Jeremy suggests taking the CVoice and CIPT exams prior to the GWGK exam.

Here's what you'll learn in each video of the CCSP-GWGK series:

Video 1 - "Welcome to GW/GK: Series Overview and CCVP Certification" - With every new program, there is typically an included "Read Me First" text file. In the same sense, consider this nugget the "Watch Me First" of the series. This nugget presents the strategies you can use for getting the most from the series, changes to the Cisco certification program, and the ideal lab equipment to use for the series. Video 2 - "Understanding the Building Blocks: Gateways, Gatekeepers, IP-to-IP Gateways, Voice Protocols" - Since the Gateway/Gatekeeper series is typically viewed near the end of the CCVP certification program, an understanding of the major equipment "building blocks" is necessary. This nugget is dedicated to a discussion of the building blocks of a voice network: voice gateways, gatekeepers, IP-to-IP gateways, and voice protocols. Video 3 - "Understanding the Building Blocks: Call Control Agents, Deployment Scenarios" - The building block discussion from the previous nugget concludes with an understanding of the supported Cisco call control agents and models. Video 4 - "Voice Protocols: Understanding and Implementing MGCP" - There are currently three voice signaling protocols which can start, end, and control VoIP calls: MGCP, H.323, and SIP. This nugget is dedicated to the first of these protocols: MGCP. Jeremy walks through purpose behind MGCP and reasons you would use this protocol in your network. The discussion then gets deeper as you explore MGCP messaging and call flows. Video 5 - "Voice Protocols: Understanding and Implementing MGCP, Part 2" - he discussion of MGCP turns practical as Jeremy moves into the MGCP general configuration process. This nugget gives special attention to MGCP backhaul configuration, which are commonly used to control ISDN PRI-based QSIG configurations. Video 6 - "Voice Protocols: Understanding and Implementing H.323" - Because of its maturity and flexibility, H.323 is the default voice signaling protocol on all Cisco routers. In this nugget, Jeremy walks through purpose behind H.323 and reasons you would use this protocol in your network. Following in suite with the MGCP discussion, you will then explore H.323 messaging and call flows. Video 7 - "Voice Protocols: Understanding and Implementing H.323, Part 2" - H.323's peer-to-peer design opens the door to a plethora of configuration potential. This nugget moves from one practical, real-world configuration to the next as you implement Cisco CallManager (CCM) dial-peer redundancy, multiple codecs per dial-peer, a variety of voice service parameters, toll bypass configuration, integration of H.323 gateways with CCM, and DTMF relay options. Video 8 - "Voice Protocols: Understanding and Implementing SIP" - The Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is poised to be the TCP/IP of the voice world. In this nugget, Jeremy looks at what is currently happening with the SIP protocol and its future. In addition, the nugget explores basic SIP configurations from both the voice gateway and Cisco CallManager perspective. Video 9 - "Legacy Connections: Analog PSTN Connectivity" - In today's world, every VoIP network must eventually end. All voice roads will eventually lead you to the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). This nugget focuses on allowing analog connectivity to the PSTN through Foreign Exchange Office (FXO) and Direct Inward Dial (DID) interfaces. In addition, Jeremy explores the use of Centralized Automated Message Accounting (CAMA) lines for emergency call trunks. Video 10 - "Legacy Connections: Digital PSTN Connectivity" - While analog PSTN connectivity runs rampant in the small business realm, larger organizations use digital trunk lines to handle a larger volume of calls. In this nugget, Jeremy looks at the digital PSTN connectivity options, then explores the configuration of each of the supported digital trunks: ISDN PRI, T1 CAS, and E1 R2. Video 11 - "Legacy Connections: PBX Interconnections" - As an organization begins to inch towards a VoIP deployment, they will often set up a small VoIP pilot network to prove the concept. Often, this pilot network will connect to the existing PBX system using smaller analog trunks. This nugget discusses the use of these analog connections to bridge the VoIP and Time-division Multiplexing (TDM) realms. Video 12 - "Legacy Connections: PBX Interconnections, Part 2" - As pilot VoIP deployments grow larger, analog lines no longer do the job. PBX interconnections quickly move into the digital phase, which is discussed in this nugget. In addition, once you have mastered digital PBX connections, you can move the network into a Tie-Line replacement phase allowing you to begin seeing cost savings immediately! Video 13 - "Voice Gateways: VoIP Fax and Modem Considerations" - Faxes and modem connections cannot usually be handled in the same way as your voice. In this nugget, Jeremy looks at multiple ways to handle fax and modem calls over the VoIP network. Video 14 - "Voice Gateways: Dial Plans and Dial Peers" - Dial plans are the core of the VoIP network. In this nugget, Jeremy discusses the best practices behind designing a dial plan and the critical concepts of inbound and outbound dial-peer matching. Video 15 - "Voice Gateways: Digit Manipulation" -As a Cisco VoIP engineer, you need to be able to change dialed numbers (DNIS) or caller id information (ANI) to meet the company requirements. This nugget discusses the concepts behind digit manipulation. Video 16 - "Voice Gateways: Digit Manipulation, Part 2" - The digit manipulation fun continues as Jeremy puts the concepts learned in the prior nugget to practice with translation rule configurations. Video 17 - "Voice Gateways: Call Admission Control" -While Quality of Service (QoS) protects the VoIP traffic from data, how are you able to protect VoIP traffic from other VoIP traffic? The answer lies in Call Admission Control (CAC) mechanisms. In this nugget, Jeremy walks through the many methods of CAC available on Cisco devices. Video 18 - "Voice Gateways: Understanding and Implementing Class of Restriction (COR)" -Not everyone can call everything. Call restrictions have been a standard part of telephony systems since decades past. Cisco implements call restrictions on voice gateways through a concept known as Class of Restriction (COR). In this nugget, Jeremy explores the ideas and configurations behind COR. Video 19 - "Voice Gateways: SRST/MGCP Fallback" -In the case of catastrophic WAN failures, your voice gateway may need to step up to support IP Phones typically handled by Cisco CallManager. This is a feature known as Survivable Remote Site Telephony (SRST), which is covered in this nugget. Video 20 - "Voice Gateways: Managing DSP Resources" -Digital Signal Processors (DSPs) are the little engines that run the voice network. These oft forgotten devices can come back to haunt you when it's time to add advanced VoIP features such as transcoding, conferencing, and media termination points. Video 21 - "Voice Gateways: TCL Scripts and Voice XML" -Tool Command Language (TCL) scripts and Voice XML allow you add functionality to your voice network that is not built in to the Cisco devices. In this nugget, Jeremy walks through the implementation of TCL scripts on a Cisco voice gateway. Video 22 - "Gatekeepers: Functionality and Network Integration" -The voice gateways have been left behind as all attention now turns to the H.323 Gatekeeper of the voice network. This nugget discusses the place, purpose, and concepts behind the H.323 Gatekeeper device. Video 23 - "Gatekeepers: Basic Configuration" -The Gatekeeper concepts now turn into the practical configuration. In this first Gatekeeper configuration nugget, Jeremy walks through the basic implementation of H.323 Gatekeepers and adds voice gateway integration. Video 24 - "Gatekeepers: Advanced Configuration" -The Gatekeeper configuration continues as Jeremy tackles multiple Gatekeeper zone implementations, Gatekeeper CAC, Directory Gatekeepers, CallManager integration, and Resource Availability Indicator (RAI). Video 25 - "IP-to-IP Gateways: Concepts and Configuration" -The IP-to-IP Gateway is a concept created by Cisco, which allows you to divide your voice network from others. In this nugget, you will learn the purposes behind the IP-to-IP Gateway and its foundation configuration. Video 26 - "The Final Word: Certification Preparation" -A Final Word is a nugget dedicated to those focused on the Cisco GW/GK certification exam. In this nugget, Jeremy walks through key study points and relates his own exam experiences.
